2012 Retrospective

I would like to nod in the direction of all that contributed to the streets of Fitzroy this year.  Fitzroy is a harsh critic.  It can be fickle, closed and discerning to a fault.  So thank you for giving me something to document, despite this old town being a very hard task master...

January: just kick ass burners
February: and Rone Can't Stop, Won't Stop, Don't Stop

March: and we had Dude, who left his name around the place for a few months

April: BNF, Frits took hold of a few lanes and for the better

May: this came from nowhere and disappeared again...a pity as we wanted more...

June: and no denying AV Crue had a stronghold and we loved it

July: and a piece here and there, talent

August: Franky gave us months of colour as we headed into the grey of winter

September: I have to name Hims as a stand out candidate...

November: and great to see S-701a and Ruskidd back...

Watch this space, my December Fav still undecided...

It's all Art to me

What of it?  I have just spent 2 hours scouring old images and I can't conclude anything apart from that I just have an uneasy feeling when bloggers, spotters, fans and enthusiasts are outraged for the loss (or gain) of some work, and oblivious to the loss (or gain) of others.

Who is to say? What is your bias? What makes some work worthy yet others not?

This not a comment on capping, slashing, street ownership or censorship.  I just want to put it out there that, before you next react in 'outrage', pause and ask why you value what you do...

Fitzrovia

I blame the weather, or the moon.  Or maybe even Dean Sunshine.  Or the actual sunshine that has briefly and lightly toasted us.  Whatever ignition sparked under the arse of Fitzroy, we are undeniably in a new era. Suddenly. Instantly. In hushed voices, the Fitzroyal have one brow raised, one hand on a coffee from Atomica and two bobs worth of opinion ...

This gives me a lot of fuel for a retrospective about the year that was but I will save that for another day.  That is probably best served as Christmas Eve fodder.  For now, I want to simply show you the Fitzroy of today that, not three months ago, had me lamenting "night after night dry bloody walls"...

Graffiti Management Fitzroy

Who doesn't love the smell of the Orange Oil and the sound of the high pressure hose, the council cars and the heavy duty brushes.  I particularly love the entrepreneurial private Graffiti Busters.  But I don't love any of them nearly as much as I love the smell of aerosol, the quiet movement and the clack of the can being shaken in a dark alley after hours.  That I love with no hint of sarcasm.

There is change in the planning for the City of Yarra.  For an explanation of what is currently under consideration in terms of sucking the life force, or should I say, cleaning up the streets of Fitzroy (and Collingwood etc)  please peruse the Images to Live By blog post.  For a visual demonstration of the effectiveness of this sort of intervention please see below....
