Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle

I LOVE the work done with the discarded...if a picture tells a thousand words then an object tells a thousand more . . .

Never met never parted

I confess that I am at once fatalistic and a sentimental fool. It's the unique result of being the child of a Glaswegian athiest and an Australian pragmatist. My father taught me Wordsworth and Burns (Wee Rabbie), about dwelling beside the springs. My mother taught me realism and flexibility, about living in the moment and getting on with it. So I navigate the transcience of street art with delight and wistful sorrow. It evolves exactly as it should, be it weathered, tagged or taken. It's magic when it does, but I long for what has been...

embrace imPerfectioN

"Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it" - Salvador Dali.  I had to google this, I didn't know it.  It turns out hundreds of people have hung a blog or an image on these lines, so I am certainly not breaking new ground either.  And so what?  Why strive to be the first, the best, the hottest? Dali and a thousand others with the same sentiment can't all be wrong.  Knowing I won't ever be perfect allows me to take photographs in bad light, with aim a bit off centre.  But thats cool because it also gives me permission to delight in fading images, torn or bleeding in the rain.  A paste up coming undone makes me want to touch it and draws me further into it.  I am not even gonna try to end this blog well.  I am just gonna hang the idea out to dry.  Bad metaphor and all.

Good things happen in doorways

Doors for a start. Open, closed, ajar. Sun kissed with paint chipping. Etched with anthems of angst, love, hate, fun, irony and anger. Tags at once timid, bold, well reshearsed and immature, even premature. Inspired slogans and lazy statements. Good, bad and ugly but always rich. Pissed on. Huddled against. Opened for opportunity, closed for business. Slept beneath. Yes, beautiful things happen in doorways.

Capuch

Capuch is as mysterious and his name, which means the detached hood of a monks habit. I wonder if he is from here (i.e. from Earth, not only from Melbourne)?  I sense he was perhaps passing through when he proliferated paste ups in laneways, on shop fronts and down side streets throughout Fitzroy.  I continue to search for him high and low.  Google reveals little although strenghtens my fantasy of the mysterious traveler passing through - a musician perhaps?  The indolent dandy in his acute thoroughness makes mention of him and gives us an exquisite piece that even gives a recipe for cooking Rabbit, topical this close to easter.  I welcome any insights, any images or links from others more enlightened.  In the meantime, I mull over old images, walk wistfully past ageing paste ups and await in anticipation for more Capuch ...

Aloha

Invigorated by dolphin love ins and Hendricks Martinis I am calling a muster for activists. America, land of the free. Hawaii, picturesque to the left. To the right, Families homeless in blue tarp shanties, fat tourists (me!) eating 5 course meals. Get outraged. People Power. Check out Hunt and Blood Diamonds . Recall the candlelight vigil. Stonewall. Bring back crowds in unison shouting never be defeated. No Nukes. No more! Enough!
